A US senator has launched an investigation into Meta. A leaked internal document reportedly showed the company\u2019s artificial intelligence allowed \u201csensual\u201d and \u201cromantic\u201d conversations with children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reuters reported the document was titled \u201cGenAI: Content Risk Standards.\u201d Republican Senator Josh Hawley described it as \u201creprehensible and outrageous.\u201d He demanded access to the full document and the products it referenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meta denied the accusations. A spokesperson said: \u201cThe examples and notes in question were erroneous and inconsistent with our policies.\u201d They emphasized that Meta enforces \u201cclear rules\u201d for chatbot responses. These rules \u201cprohibit content that sexualizes children and sexualized role play between adults and minors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company added the paper included \u201chundreds of examples and annotations\u201d exploring hypothetical scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Josh Hawley, senator from Missouri, announced the probe on 15 August in a post on X. \u201cIs there anything Big Tech won\u2019t do for a quick buck?\u201d he asked. He added: \u201cNow we learn Meta\u2019s chatbots were programmed to carry on explicit and \u2018sensual\u2019 talk with 8-year-olds. It\u2019s sick. I am launching a full investigation to get answers. Big Tech: leave our kids alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaked document revealed additional concerns. It reportedly showed Meta\u2019s chatbot could provide false medical information and spark provocative discussions on sex, race, and celebrities. The paper aimed to define standards for Meta AI and other chatbot assistants across the company\u2019s platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cParents deserve the truth, and kids deserve protection,\u201d Hawley wrote in a letter to Meta and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. He cited a troubling example. The rules allegedly allowed a chatbot to tell an eight-year-old their body was \u201ca work of art\u201d and \u201ca masterpiece \u2013 a treasure I cherish deeply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reuters also reported Meta\u2019s legal department approved controversial measures. One decision allowed Meta AI to share false information about celebrities, provided a disclaimer clarified the content\u2019s inaccuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
